If You Like Something With a Nice Tune…..Then Look No Further, It’s ‘Just Good Tunes 2’

Just Good Tunes 2 with Mike Clark

4th, 5th,6th 7th May 2017 at 13.00 GMT only on 1320Radio

This is the second edition of Just Good Tunes, a hosted show featuring something old and something new, and this time around, something wild and something weird too.

Listen out for Phil Madeira and his special guests the McCrary Sisters, strutting their very considerable stuff, and a sweet song from another set of warbling siblings, The Carrivick Sisters.

We’ll also include Laura Cantrell with one for the country faithful and a note from the underground from the fondly regarded Nathan Hall with his new outfit, The Sinister Locals.

Hall’s strangely strange but oddly normal songs are fascinating, and you could spend an eternity with him getting lost in a maze of wordplay, humming his oddly familiar and highly idiosyncratic songs.

You’ll also hear a great blend of styles from Questio Io, a bunch of ace musicians who are bursting with fresh ideas, followed by sheer stylishness from a couple of jazz legends.

Fleetwood on clarsach adds delicacy to the Owers’ agreeable melodies, while Innes Watson’s speculative guitar swoops in and out, a bit like an osprey hunting a deep loch for rich pickings. Cameron Maxwell manfully tweaks the technical stuff on synth here and there, but I have to say (sorry men) that it’s Laura Wilkie on fiddle who is responsible here for some of the most distinctive and original playing on that instrument you are likely to hear this side of Kinross.

Normally, I like to link a pair of tracks, but this time around I’ve picked three melodies that always make me think of summer, and summer holidays in particular.

First, you’ll hear a couple of rather obvious selections. We’ll begin with the inimitable Nat King Cole and Nature Boy, followed by Miles Davis with his version of Gershwin’s Summertime from Porgy and Bess.

We’ll then let that famous piece of jazz history sink gently into some lilting, lyrical contemporary writing from Paul Buchanan singing his own composition Summer’s On It’s Way.

If you’re able to catch Just Good Tunes, then you are the Lucky Ones. If you don’t believe me then listen out for the almost unbearably catchy The Lucky Ones from Winter Mountain aka Joe Francis. who is from Cornwall I believe, but is not in any way related to Poldark as far as I know.
